== Avali Packs ==
Avali work within packs, and the main contribution to society and how others process them are done in a pack. What a pack is is defined differently depending on culture and region, but there are some universal ways in which packs are defined and operate.

Notably, packs are largely how avali function in a way productive to society. If a task is assigned, it is assigned to packs rather than individuals. It is extremely rare for an individual to make a solo, notable contribution to larger society - and the vast majority of credit and recognition is directed towards packs. Packs with few exceptions share resources, housing, and productivity direction.

Avali generally require packs to stay organized in thought and action, as well as propping up emotional well being and stability. An individual avali is still quite capable, but it is never considered appropriate to task a single avali to something outside of their pack.

An avali pack generally consists of 3-12 members of avali who have bonded successfully. Packs do not tend to consist of avali who are related by blood, because of how avali are generally [[Hatcheries|raised]] - however, exceptions apply.

== Pack Bonding ==
Avali bond to their packs, forming an emotional connection and dependence on those in the pack. Avali tend to naturally start looking for pack members very young - as soon as they're able to communicate in any way. While bonding does happen naturally, in more organized society young avali grow up around each other in [[Hatchery|hatcheries]] where they are observed for natural bonding behavior, and then are given more time with the avali they seem to be bonding to.

=== Pack Loss ===
When an avali in a pack is cut off or lost from a pack, avali have an intense emotional reaction that - when gone untreated - can result in significant emotional and cognitive decay. This is called "pack loss" and it is something most avali go through at least once in their lives. An avali who is experiencing pack loss is extremely susceptible to outbursts of anger, sadness, or depression and are often treated very gently by those around them. They also tend to be susceptible to catastrophic or delusional negative thinking - and going after untreated for too long - can experience psychosis and complete loss of grasp on reality.

While it is possible to get through pack loss without direct treatment, generally avali require outside help to get through pack loss. Treatment for pack loss varies culturally, but tends to include medication, finding a new pack, as well as therapeutic techniques. Modern techniques for pack loss treatment can result in a very swift recovery from the loss, and medication developed for pack loss has been developed and refined more than most other medications.

Pack loss is always difficult, and has not fully been "solved" by medication and treatment, however it is no longer considered to be an extremely disruptive thing - only tending to require recovery time measured in weeks instead of months or years.

===== Historical Treatment =====
While treatment for pack loss has been greatly streamlined by modern techniques, there do are situations where these resources aren't available or are refused. The general mentality when dealing with pack loss without modern treatment involves a mentality around comfort and celebration.

The afflicted avali will be kept with another or several other avali in a quiet space, with consistent physical comfort. In this space, the songs or words or creative works of the lost packmate are slowly introduced in a very soft and subtle manner, building up to asking the afflicted avali to participate in recreating them as best as they can - asking them to either hum them, write words, draw things out - whatever is the strongest association.

Once the avali is able to function again after a few days of this soft treatment, there is a very concentrated effort to celebrate the works and expression of the lost, to give their music or voice or works a way to continue forward and celebrate the space they took up. When the afflicted avali is able to start showing signs of joy in these expressions, there is work to bring their expressions of creativity and affection into permanent memory. Their creative works are then brought into the afflicted avali's creative works, combining and making them a part of their own expression - highlighting that the lost is still part of them and feeling their presence in a joyful way.

After the afflicted avali is in this state and is able to find joy in the memory of the lost's work, the actual loss is able to start being processed slowly - working through the avali's emotions about it. This work is only continued while there is a capacity for cheer, allowing them to process each part on their own basis.

Reintegration into productive cycles are largely determined by the avali experiencing loss, with only gentle pushes to open up more.

It is possible for an avali to go through these things themselves and largely guide their own recovery, however this is extremely rare and avali have always evolved to assist others when they experience this loss.

==== Pack Broken ====
An avali who is completely cut off from their pack and is without one is considered to be pack broken. Being pack broken is an extremely urgent state, and an avali who is pack broken needs consistent care and company to begin to recover. Treatment for a pack broken avali is very similar to an avali experiencing pack loss - but greater intention and care is given to how it is treated. Ideally, the pack broken avali would receive treatment from or in company with the pack that they would eventually join. The symptoms of being pack broken are similar to the symptoms of pack loss, but happen much more swiftly and can easily result in permanant disability if not treated swiftly and with intensive care.

While it is very uncommon for an avali in the modern era to experience fully being pack broken, in more intense areas where it is slightly more likely for it to happen it can result in swaths of avali who are pack broken and permanently effected. Going untreated, being pack broken for long peroids of time can result in delusional, violent, or otherwise extremely unstable avali.

===== Pack Resistence =====
Pack resistance is a rare condition where an individual avali is unable to bond with a pack, and can happen as a result of lack of treatment for intense pack loss or as a result of being pack broken for too long. This is considered a disability, and is fairly rare. An avali with pack resistance is often very aloof, difficult to speak to, and is prone to lying or otherwise engaging in antisocial behavior. Pack resistance is curable, however the techniques in curing it are not always effective.

====== Innate Pack Resistance ======
In extremely rare cases, an avali has pack resistance from birth and is unable to bond. Innate Pack Resistance (IPR) results in an avali who has a lot of issues integrating into larger society, and tends to result in an avali that can function but is often considered to contribute far less than they would in a pack. As this is extremely rare, avali with IPR tend to be extremely misunderstood.

Behaviorally, IPR tends to make an avali prone to desiring isolation or otherwise being antisocial - often developing fears of other avali. Symptoms of IPR tend to include paranoia, dellusional thinking, intrusive thoughts, and a phobia of vulnerability both from themselves and others. Avali with IPR tend to experience a lighter version of pack loss consistently, and while it is possible to live with an be happy with this disability, most with IPR tend to struggle immensely as society is not built with them in mind. It is possible for an avali with IPR to eventually be cured, but this only happens rarely. IPR tends to result in avali who leave society and dissapear in some manner - their internal fears and/or poor treatment from society driving them away.

Avali with IPR tend to be considered as a pack individually - though a largely dysfunctional and unproductive one.

== Pack Organizations ==
Within avali society, there are many cultural ways to form and organize packs. Most packs tend to fall into one of two categories - though it should be understood that how a pack is organized is largely modified by the [[Avali Tribe|tribes]] that they are a part of, the individuals in the pack, and the culture that surrounds them.

=== Static Packs ===
Most avali in more developed society participate in a static pack - these are packs that, in general, do not shift members often and are generally either assigned very young, or formed in adolescence. These packs tend to specialize in one area of expertise to make their contributions, and tend to result in a group of extremely close avali who spend their lives together.

Static packs do bring in new members, especially in cases where an avali is pack broken and needs a new place to be. These types of new integrations can be difficult because an avali shifting between packs tends to need additional emotional support from new pack members. The requirement for emotional support does often help in pack bonding, and this process tends to be smooth in cases where an avali is able to find or is assigned to new pack swiftly. Avali from packs with similar specializations are generally assigned to packs with the same or a similar specialization so that integration can happen quickly.

Static packs tend to be more familial, trending towards finding sexual partners and experiences from those that aren't in the same pack - though it is not terribly uncommon for mating to occur within packs.

=== Dynamic Packs ===
Packs shifting in form is less common, but some cultures form around this type of pack bonding. Dynamic packs are more fluid, and generally occur when the larger tribe is very emotionally close. As everyone bonds freely, avali can leave and join different packs within the tribe without much fanfare or issue. It is very rare that this structure includes avali outside of a tribe.

The dynamic pack paradigm tends to form in areas where pack loss is common, when shifts are inevitable and expected. Dynamic packs are much more resilient to changes caused by pack loss, and tend towards being able to integrate and bond with new pack members swiftly. These style of packs generally have a few individual relationships that form the core, and loss of one of those core members tends to be felt more harshly, more resembling a static pack in the loss - though what could be considered the core of the pack is not static and is also loosely defined.

Because a tribe where packs are dynamic necessarily encourage avali to generalize in skill, this can often stifle speed of innovation and productivity in exchange for its resiliency. This also results in a single pack being assigned many different kinds of tasks depending on its members. Tribes that are dynamic tend to be less organized in purpose, but have a lore more awareness of avali as individuals as every pack has to adjust to the strengths and weaknesses of who is in the pack at the moment.

Dynamic packs trends towards being more open and fluid with both pack and outside relationships. Sexual relations and activities between pack members that aren't geared towards a purpose tend to be identical between pack and tribe members, and the lines are very blurred.

== Individual Avali Dynamics ==
Despite being dependent on packs for emotional stability, function, and organization- avali can have deep personal lives as well, with rich interpersonal relationships and projects of their own. While avali can struggle with feeling overwhelmed if individually tasked with too much, they often take a level of joy in finding some kind of specialty or craft to focus on as an individual.

Common among avali is the exploration of self - society is largely based in pack dynamics, and it is common to have a little time away from that for self exploration. Avali do not tend to police others in these explorations, as power and societal changes happen in groups. It does not shift power if an individual avali goes against convention, and there would be little incentive to try to bring arbitrary traits "in line" with the rest of society. It is widely accepted that it is okay not to understand the actions of an individual you know, and very common not to evaluate beyond that. Relationships between avali can be heavily varied and complex- beyond packs and tribes there are very few well defined paths to follow.

A single avali is likely to find some refreshment in getting lost in a personal project or having very rich relationships with those around them. Creative projects are the most common, and creative endeavors are generally accepted as something that most avali do. Performance can be common, but creation for creation's sake is the most common form. Avali often do not record or save personal creative works, and how an individual is processed by those around them is often informed by their consistent creative expression and how that has evolved over time.

It is not uncommon for individual avali to take interest in hobbies that are less traditionally creative. Many of the ideas individuals have and play around with - technologically or culturally - become pack projects to then be grown into a proper invention or use for society. Tinkering is very common as a personal hobby, and many packs utilize the scrappy hobby projects of their more technically inclined pack members.

== Avali Presentation Styles (Gender) ==
Avali do not have gender in the same ways that humans do, and there are no ties to sexual organs. Differences between individual avali in a pack can be varied, and presentation or "gender" differences does not tend to effect how avali or packs are treated in society at large, though they can have a usually superficial effect on interpersonal relationships between individuals.

Avali do have a loose categorization for presentation styles, very much based on how much presentation and personality traits demand attention. While presentation styles vary widely, visual presentation can be "loud" - demanding attention with bright or irridescant colors, loud jewelry for example - or it can be "quiet," being more subdued. Personality can also be "loud" or "quiet" - demanding or shrinking from attention in the same way.

These two qualities can be mixed for any type of categorization purposes, quiet presentation and loud personality are possible, as well as vice versa. Presentation and personality obviously go deeper than these traits, but the general words to express these things are the closest analog to gender that avali have. These traits do not tend to inform a pack's position in society or an individual's standing within interpersonal relationships.

= Northern Avali =
While the majority of northern [[Avalon]] is considered uninhabitable, tribes have settled in the north around [[wikipedia:Geothermal_activity|geothermic vents]] which have allowed enough warmth to live and gather the scarce resources around. Several disconnected tribes exist in northern Avalon, with significant differences in culture and ways of life - though several broad cultural concepts are consistent among tribes due to environmental factors and migration between tribes.

While the north has been fairly isolated, there is a current project lead by avali from [[Central]] to bring northern avalon into a more technically and medically modern state. Central’s primary methods of [[power delivery]] are incompatible with the north due to geomagnetic factors, and it is only recently that a push has been made to provide modern technology to the northern tribes.

== Physical Characteristics ==
Northern avali are physically smaller than other avali - generally about one to two heads shorter than avali common to Central. Their ears droop downward, weighted by denser feathers. Their feathers do not tend to be particularly clean looking, taking on a fluffier appearance due to this density.

Northern avali patterns vary and don’t tend tend to follow exact lines. Males trend towards having splotches of color dispersed, generally around the eyes and areas where there are larger muscles - thighs, sides, upper arms, base of the ears. Female northern avali tend to be a single, neutral color, with specs of a very slightly different shade dotting various areas - common are the entire or parts of the head, middle and ends of feathers, the back, the ends of the ears, thighs, and sides. Their feathers are often more iridescent, and reflect more light, though in less clean patterns. Mono color northern avali and variant are common as well for both sexes.

Northern avali tails take on fluffy traits of the rest of their bodies, and don't stick upward, instead starting that direction and drooping downwards towards the end. They are often wider and more dense than avali from other regions.

== Technology ==
Northern avali often use a stone/crystal called elevo which has a blue, uv-like luminescent glow without needing any kind of fuel. This is often used alongside heat sources in order to provide illumination - mostly used in tents or other places where avali often inhabit. This resource is fairly rare and important to northern tribes especially during times of light scarcity, which has historically been frequent. Elevo is often craved for its subtle glow by those looking for specific styles of visual augment, and northern tribes are often raided by those looking to acquire this resource for themselves or others.

Technology in the north diverges heavily from that of other areas. It is very energy and heat considerate - any heat generated necessarily needs to be harvested and used by the rest of the encampment. It is often insulated and connected in ways that look bizarre to other avali - very often using well insulated piping. Northern avali don't often use very standard technologies that are abundant in other areas of Avalon as energy consumption and heat output with the standard technologies are not sustainable for the northern environment. Augments are not uncommon in the north, but augments that take energy with no function are extremely discouraged. Augments that consume energy and cannot really be turned off are also generally not used. Northern avali in recent years have been working on incorporating [[Power delivery|thermal carrier generation]] into low power augments, as well as finding ways to store energy from geothermic vents in a manner that is compatible with the environment.

Technological progress has ramped up in the north in recent years, and creative solutions to the environmental problems are currently being investigated and implemented.

== Culture ==
Most northern tribes are not nomadic, clustering around various types of geothermic vents for warmth and the richer fauna surrounding them. Their dwellings tend towards semi mobility, as a number of factors could force them to move. This spread and isolation generally means that northern culture tends to be fairly diverse, though a few principals have been fairly universal, due to environmental factors.

=== Spirituality and Cultural Themes ===
Heat conservation is imperative for survival, and because of this northern tribes often treat heat with an enormous amount of respect. Northern technologies are designed to recapture any heat they expend. At the most extreme, heat is worshipped in some tribes and given a spiritual reverence. For many tribes, elevo and its use have been a staple of the culture, and is considered sacred or important to the culture as well.

Northern avali are often encouraged to exist as they are, to let events roll off of them, and to be one with the environment. Very common is the idea of mindfulness, and being okay with not understanding another avali or pack or idea. It is encouraged to both explore the things you'd like to explore, while also being okay with not understanding. Trust in your tribe is paramount, and allowing yourself to not stress over something that another tribe member has covered is very common.

Northern avali do speak the same language as has been adopted by the majority of Avalon, but they do tend towards having a distinctive accent - characterized by "blending" their words together and modulating the pitch and resonance in a much more "legato" way than other avali speak. They can be a little difficult to understand at first, but adjustment to the accent tends to be very swift.

Very common is adding some kind of melodic interpretation to emotions even mid conversation, and movements tend to be dance-like and smooth as well when trying to communicate via body language. Northern avali often use their bodies more emphatically to communicate ideas in addition to language.

=== Pack and Tribe Dynamics ===
Northern tribes and [[Avali Pack|packs]] tend to be fairly close knit, and it is common to have very close attachments to both mates and packmates, as living in the north means you are more likely to see the same avali many times throughout your life. Tokens given for mating are less common, and it is a little more common for northerners to mate amongst pack members - though generally mating happens between tribe members. While bonding over physical sex is still commonplace, mating itself is given a little more consideration. In times of resource scarcity, mating is discouraged - though kits born during this time are still given every consideration as kits born during times of abundance.

Relationships between packmates and tribe members tend towards being less rigid. It is often that a pack has a set of core members, with others joining and leaving every so often as attachments change. Tribe members are generally very familiar with each other, and bonding so freely has helped with pack separation and pack loss.

Northern tribes range from very open to very militant, and each had differing ways to deal with outside forces. Although raids are far less common now that Central is actively going after raiders, northern tribes are still often wary of threats.

While northerners are very quick to defend themselves in a very forceful manner - something learned through generations of raids - many tribes tend to be very welcoming of those who would come with good-natured intentions. All but the most militant tribes are not closed off, in either technology or culture, and tend to welcome visitors looking to know more - though these kinds of visitors have historically been very rare. Northerners themselves are not against mating with or incorporating those who are not northern into their tribes, but this also is fairly rare due to societal stigma and the higher chance that the resulting kits will have issues with the cold.

Most communication with the [[Solakkian Union]] tends to involve frustration on both ends, as most central technology or ways of resource acquisition and spread is not compatible with the north or the avali that live there. There tends to be a lot of misunderstanding, and historical attempts to try to integrate the northerners into the central systems have ended in failure and frustration. New systems for the north have required a large amount of rework and innovation, and the technical debt is fairly large.

Northerners are not generally regarded well. At best they are seen as reclusive and violent, and at worst they are seen as sub-avali. It is taboo to mate with a northerner, and avali who may have northern descendency are often looked down on or harassed. Northern blood tends to give traits that are not considered fashionable or attractive in modern Avalon. Historically, raiders that have been caught were only punished when there was political pressure to do so, which has only been true in recent years. There remains a lot of stigma about the northern tribes, though sentiment is improving as the active effort in the north pushes forward.

=== Traditions and History ===
The vast majority of northern history is passed down orally - tribes being as spread as they are means that there are a variety of subcultures and historical differences to be found in the north. Record keeping on a more permanent basis is a fairly new development, and something only originally started for medical purposes. Much of northern history has devolved into folklore, and while there is a current active effort to record the history that has been passed down, at the moment there is not a clear picture of the history of northern tribes more than just a few generations.

=== Music and Celebrations ===
Like many places on Avalon, northern avali tend to express themselves through music. Packmates will often hum harmonies with each other for bonding or comfort, and the prolific extent of this expression is theorized to have caused the more legato accent that northerners tend to have.

While northern music is only rarely recorded, it tends to be very heavy in texture and ambiance - often lacking in definitive melody. Musical ideas are layered on top of these textures in cases where specific emotions are attempting to be communicated, however mindfulness and allowing it to wash over tend to be the main intent.

Dance is also very common casually - movement and expressiveness through movement is very common. Northern avali very commonly dance without reason, and it is generally regarded normal to do so in casual events and in front of others. As rare as formal and serious meetings are meetings are, it is common to be more still and express yourself more precisely in such events.

Celebrations tend to combine these factors, adding rhythm and melody to the musical textures and purpose to the movements. Choreographed dances are very common, and celebrations of new seasons and resource abundance are fairly commonplace. While resources spent during a celebration are still fairly conservative, there still is a stockpile that northern avali tend to use to celebrate life with each other.

== Power Delivery ==
On a macro level, power delivery in avali society is built around wireless power delivery via transmitters similar to cellular towers with extensions built withing dwellings. These transmitters leverage electromagnetic forces to both pinpoint devices to deliver power to as well as deliver the power. Specialized receivers convert the energy towards something more usable for devices designed to leverage this technology.

Devices are connected to the towers, and the signal gets strong enough to power devices. Most personal devices have very small, auxiliary solid state batteries. This method of power delivery allows for power delivery while flying, and cuts down on size and material requirement for powered augments. Portable batteries and power emitters are used when traveling to remote areas of Avalon not yet covered, or when traveling off world.

Due to efficiency improvements, small auxiliary devices without much power requirements and many augments can be powered primarily through temperature differential between the warmer avali and the outside air. This kind of power delivery is used planetwide, but is most useful in the colder areas of Avalon- though the usefulness of this is limited to devices that do not require much power at all. This technology is called thermal carrier generation. Most of Avalon uses a combination of these technologies, though some regions where geomagnetic forces disrupt wireless power delivery require alternative power solutions - this is most prevalent in the [[Northern Avali|far north]] and [[Southern Avali|south]] of Avalon.

Once the avali is able to function again after a few days of this soft treatment, there is a very concentrated effort to celebrate the works and expression of the lost, to give their music or voice or works a way to continue forward and celebrate the space they took up. When the afflicted avali is able to start showing signs of joy in these expressions, there is work to bring their expressions of creativity and affection into permanent memory. Their creative works are then brought into the afflicted avali's creative works, combining and making them a part of their own expression - highlighting that the lost is still part of them and feeling their presence in a joyful way.

After the afflicted avali is in this state and is able to find joy in the memory of the lost's work, the actual loss is able to start being processed slowly - working through the avali's emotions about it. This work is only continued while there is a capacity for cheer, allowing them to process each part on their own basis.

Reintegration into productive cycles are largely determined by the avali experiencing loss, with only gentle pushes to open up more.

It is possible for an avali to go through these things themselves and largely guide their own recovery, however this is extremely rare and avali have always evolved to assist others when they experience this loss.

Northern avali don't often use very standard technologies that are abundant in other areas of Avalon - the energy delivery used by the rest of avalon does not function well in the north due to environmental factors, and energy consumption and heat output with the standard technologies are not sustainable for the northern environment. Augments are not uncommon in the north, but augments that take energy with no function are extremely discouraged. Augments that consume energy and cannot really be turned off are also generally not used.

Northern avali do speak the same language as has been adopted by the majority of Avalon, but they do tend towards having a distinctive accent - characterized by "blending" their words together and modulating the pitch and resonance in a much more "legato" way than other avali speak. They can be a little difficult to understand at first, but adjustment to the accent tends to be very swift.

Northern avali often use a resource called <northern resource> which has a blue, uv-like luminescent glow without needing any kind of fuel. (haven't found a great name for this yet.) This is often used alongside heat sources in order to provide illumination - mostly used in tents or other places where avali often inhabit. This resource is fairly rare and important to northern tribes especially during times of light scarcity, which is often.

<northern resource> is often craved for its subtle glow by those looking for specific styles of visual augment, and northern tribes are often raided by those looking to acquire this resource for themselves or others.

Northern tribes and packs tend to be fairly close knit, and it is common to have very close attachments to both mates and packmates, as living in the north means you are more likely to see the same avali many times throughout your life. Tokens given for mating are less common, and it is a little more common for northerners to mate amongst pack members - though generally mating happens between tribe members, still. While bonding over physical sex is still commonplace, mating itself is given a little more consideration. In times of resource scarcity, mating is discouraged - though kits born during this time are still given every consideration as kits born during times of abundance.

While northerners are very quick to defend themselves in a very forceful manner - something learned through generations of raids - they tend to be very welcoming of those who would come with good natured intentions. They are not closed off, in either technology or culture, and tend to welcome visitors looking to know more - though these kinds of visitors are exceptionally rare. Northerners themselves are not against mating with or incorporating those who are not northern into their tribes, but this is extremely rare as many, many generations of avali have bodies more adapted to the extreme temperatures.

More often, visitors that arrive are raiders looking to steal supplies of <northern resource> or avali looking to "provide gifts" and "civilize the north" in the hopes of also acquiring the resource. Most communication with the <conglomerate/illuminate/core packs> tends to involve frustration on both ends, as most central technology or ways of resource acquisition and spread is not compatible with the north or the avali that live there. There tends to be a lot of misunderstanding, and renewed attempts to try to integrate the northerners into the central systems have ended in failure and frustration. New systems for the north would incur a huge amount of rework, and as central systems grow the technical burden of integration only piles up.

Northern avali do not tend to move around, and gravitate around geothermic vents for heat. Their dwellings tend towards semi mobility, as a number of factors could force them to move. Recordkeeping tends to be very sparse.

Northerners are not generally regarded well - at best they are seen as reclusive and violent, and at worst they are seen as sub-avali. It is taboo to mate with a northerner, and avali who may have northern descendency are often looked down on or harrassed. Northern blood tends to give traits that are not considered fashionable or attractive. Those who raid the north are only generally punished when there is enough political pressure, and there usually is none.
